Plants vs. Zombies: Retake the Lawn

by Maxwell McIlwain and Ryan Daly

For  Intro to Game Development

A top-down action fan-game based around the Plants vs. Zombies franchise, in the style of Enter the Gungeon.

Interview:
✧In one or two sentences, what is your game about?

The main idea was to make a fun action game based around the PVZ franchise. With the franchise in such turmoil as of late we wanted to make an homage to the classics we enjoyed.

✧What was the inspiration of the game? What made your team decide to make this game specifically?

It started as a skin for a class project, a couple of pngs on a 2d shooter base. But then came the thought, what if we took this further and actually built it out into a game. And the rest was history.

✧Were there difficult moments when developing the game? What led to those difficult moments? What did you learn from it?

Technical challenges came up often, Github merging be damned, but the biggest problem was largely scope. With such a rich base to pull from, it's hard to keep yourself from adding and adding until you realize you've run out of floor to stand on.

✧Were there darlings that you had to kill? What were they? Why was the decision made to remove them from the project, and what were the reasons that you like the darling so much?

Rougelike progression and procedural dungeons. It just wasn't feasible with the engine and would have taken way too long to figure out.

✧Talk about your teammates! What was everyone’s role?

Max McIlwain was lead designer and programmer, also handling level design and sound. Ryan Daly was the main artist, also assisting in visual effects and certain programming systems.
